{"id":181449,"date":"2022-04-20T15:22:38","date_gmt":"2022-04-20T13:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.idmo.it\/?p=181449"},"modified":"2022-04-21T09:56:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T07:56:11","slug":"ukraine-disinformation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/en\/2022\/04\/20\/ukraine-disinformation-2\/","title":{"rendered":"A Ukraine-related disinformation tsunami hit Europe in March"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ukraine-related disinformation in March 2022 was the biggest disinformation phenomenon ever recorded by the EDMO monthly briefs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 20 organizations* part of the EDMO fact-checking network that contributed to this brief published a total of 1.620 fact-checking articles in March 2022. Out of these articles, 959 (59%) focused on Ukraine-related disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This percentage is the highest ever recorded by these briefs regarding the share of a single topic on the total disinformation detected. The previous record was about COVID-19-related disinformation, which weighted for 51.5% in December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The situation in Ukraine strongly mobilized the fact-checking community and its coordination efforts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read in Italian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/2022\/04\/21\/ucraina-disinformazione\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Covid-19 related disinformation is almost vanishing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of the 1.620 fact-checking articles published in March by the 20 organizations* part of the EDMO fact-checking network that contributed to this brief, 144 (9%) focused on COVID-19-related disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The share is less than one third of the previous one, which was already the minimum ever recorded by these briefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drop in the number of cases in the EU is only a partial explanation. The rise of a new, all- embracing topic like the war in Ukraine relegated the pandemic at the margins of public debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-1024x746.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-181450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-1024x746.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-768x560.png 768w, https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-24x17.png 24w, https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-36x26.png 36w, https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53-48x35.png 48w, https:\/\/www.idmo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schermata-2022-04-20-alle-14.55.53.png 1518w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 9 man narratives detected in disinformation circulating in the Eu in March are: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Russian invasion of Ukraine is actually justified &nbsp;(e.g. there was a genocide of the Russian- speaking population in Donbass; NATO broke a deal signed with the Ussr in 1991; US bio-labs in Ukraine needed to be destroyed, etc.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Calumnying Volodymyr Zelensky (he is a Nazi, a satanist, a drug addict, a coward, etc.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ukrainians and Ukrainian forces are largely Nazi<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pro-Ukraine war propaganda (e.g. &#8220;Ghosts of Kiev&#8221; mythology)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Western traditional media spread false news\/ false images about the war (e.g. about the Bucha massacre or the Mariupol hospital bombing)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ukrainian refugees are violent, fascists, thieves etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Humanitarian aid to Ukraine is useless (e.g., medicines and food are thrown away)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Exaggerated russophobic sentiment in European countries<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Exaggerated negative economical consequences of the war and of the sanctions in Europe<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These narratives are supported by many false news widely spread all across Europe, as detected also in EDMO&#8217;S Weekly Brief&nbsp;on Ukraine-related disinformation.
